In an unprecedented move, the Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ned Yost on Monday, hoping to pull out of another late-season slump that has jeopardized the team's chance of making the playoffs for the first time since 1982. Third-base coach Dale Sveum will take over as interim manager for the remainder of the season. The Brewers have lost seven of eight and fallen into a tie with Philadelphia for the NL wild-card lead. |

Interesting Thoughts on Sports and Drugs
Once upon a time, the lords of the Olympic Games believed that the only true champion was an amateur, a gentleman hobbyist untainted by commerce. Today they enforce a different ideal. The winners of the gold medals are supposed to be natural athletes, untainted by technology. After enough “scandals,” the amateur myth eventually died of its own absurdity. The natural myth is still alive in Beijing, but it’s becoming so far-fetched — and potentially dangerous — that some scientists and ethicists would like to abandon it, too. What if we let athletes do whatever they wanted to excel? Before you dismiss this notion, consider what we’re stuck with today. The system is ostensibly designed to create a level playing field, protect athletes’ health and set an example for children, but it fails on all counts. I had the pleasure of DJing the East High School class of 1988 20th class reunion over the weekend. Wow, what a great time! The reunion was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison. Very nice room for the event, good food, free beer and of course... MUSIC!
Things got off to a slow start while everyone chatted. I think they needed a little alcohol as well. By about 10 pm though the joints were loose and everyone started to party hard. There was one bump in the road when I played Kid Rock's "Too Hot" (maybe not enough people knew the song?), but aside from that... it's was lights out! I think from a personal perspective it was one of my, if not my best, gig in regard to working the crowd. I think I done good. : ) P.S. I won a cookbook at the silent auction titled "There's a Purgolder in the Kitchen". Nice. |

Madison North Side ice arena gets first major upgrades in four decades One of Madison's three ice arenas is getting its first major renovation in more than 40 years. For many seasons, Hartmeyer Ice Arena on the city's North Side has been having problems with its ice sheet. The permafrost — the sand foundation the ice sheet rested on — was damaged and caused the ice to shift and bulge. |

What a Difference a Week Can Make |

Last week I was riding high after the Crew swept the Cards. Now, I'm hoping the Brewers can win one game and stop the bleeding. The Cubs have taken the first 3 in the series, but there is still hope. Winning one of four at home is not much, but it's a heck of a lot better than being swept.
What happened? When did things start to unravel? I think most people would point to the play Rickie Weeks didn't make in Monday night's game where he threw the ball into the stands on a potential inning ending double play. It was his 2nd error of the inning and an absolute momentum killing, back breaking missed opportunity for the Brewers.
I think the Brewers can bounce back, but after getting swept at home by the Cubs and seeing their 1/2 game deficit jump to 4 or 5 games you know their confidence is shaken. : (
Good series over the weekend against the Braves with the exception of Sunday's uninspired shutout loss. Not pleased, but life will go on. They just need to pick things up a bit and play like they're capable of. Be more selective at the plate, play good defense and generate some runs with base hits and timely hitting. They can't continue to live on the long ball. |
